HARRISON & FITZROY Landscape Design

H&F Landscape Design was founded in 2008 by Barney Harrison and Ian FitzRoy. Since then we have created numerous beautiful gardens, mainly in London and the South East, for clients who wished to transform their land, no matter the size, into a constantly pleasing enhancement to their home.

We provide a comprehensive range of services from consultation and design to landscaping and planting and all of our services are delivered in a friendly, personal and caring manner. Our initial consultation is free and we will explain fully all the options open to you within your budget.

icon GARDEN DESIGN
As we are asked to consider sites of various sizes and complexity, we categorise our design offer on two levels:
Level 1 - applies to smaller and more straightforward sites such as found in most level urban and suburban gardens. Our concept planning offer for this level will comprise two original and different concepts with personalised A4 scaled drawings based on the client’s personal brief. We will also provide a budget estimate based on the concept that is chosen, with or without modification.
Level 2 - applies to bigger and more complicated sites. For this level of project we provide a full garden design. Once again we provide two concepts with scaled drawings for the client to consider and we follow this up with a large-scaled detailed master plan, examples of which you can find on the website. This more comprehensive and detailed design process will include construction drawings together with visual representations of the site.
Design Charges

To convert your ideas into reality the first step will be to meet you on site to discuss the details. Once we have been able to assess the size and complexity of your project we will be able to provide you with a firm design proposal together with an estimated costing.

icon LANDSCAPING
We have great experience in designing and building using a wide range of materials including York and other paving stones, decorative brickwork, timber (including railway sleepers) and other reconstituted or contemporary materials.
From paths to patios and pergolas to ponds, there will be an optimum material combination to produce the desired effect and we will deliver it for you.
With so many materials to choose from, we are able to guide you as to the most suitable for a particular feature and help you create the look and ambience that you desire to enhance the planting that you choose to accompany it. Elsewhere on the website you can find examples of our work that illustrate this point.
Unlike many others, we do not outsource the construction element of our work but do it ourselves so that you can rest assured of consistent high quality and service.

icon PLANTING
We do what we do because we love plants!
Unfortunately not all plants like all soils and environments and it is our job to advise you as to what is likely to flourish and what will not. We will then agree on a final planting plan.
We source only top quality trees, shrubs and perennials and we set out planting plans for specific areas on site. Our preparation service includes the removal of existing plants, soil cultivation and nutrient feed.
We also offer a winter cut-back and mulch service, which includes expert tree pruning, cutting back dead perennial growth and mulching with spent mushroom compost.

ABOUT US

Having worked together on a number of projects for award-winning garden design practices, Barney Harrison and Ian FitzRoy decided to set up their own business gaining the independence to give their own ideas, skills and experience the opportunity to flourish. Together they had helped design and build gardens at both the Chelsea and Hampton Court flower shows and wanted to take this experience on to the next level.

  • Barney

Born in 1977, the son of two teachers, Barney grew up in Oxted in Surrey and learned from his mother the pleasure that a beautiful garden brings. He studied garden design at Merrist Wood Horticultural College before planting his latent talent in the big wide world. Before the creation of H&F, when he was 31, he was able to learn from top to bottom the art of creating the right garden for the right space. A great deal of what he learned about plants came from . . .

  • Ian

A vastly experienced nurseryman, plantsman and garden designer with numerous accreditations and awards, Ian was an invited lecturer at Kew on his speciality of grafting Acers and Gingkos. Sadly, Ian died far too young in 2010 and we keep his name in our title as a testament to a great bloke and a great gardener, who freely passed on his vast knowledge to others.

OPINION

  • Great Job
From : Dominic & Sam, Woodham

Harrison and FitzRoy did a great job with our garden. It was overgrown, full of weeds and needed a complete re-design. After looking at other companies, we chose H&F for their design and enthusiasm for plants. This was evident in the final result. They rotavated the tired soil, cleared all weeds, set out the new lawn and placed new plants in a way that has entertained us ever since througout the seasons. I'd highly recommend them to anyone.

  • Imaginative Design
From : Diana & Jim, Reigate

We moved from a woodland garden with substantial views and Barney Harrison created within our new smaller garden a surprising number of intriguing vistas and a feeling of space. He worked with skill to include our thoughts and produced imaginative designs. At the end of the day our garden reflects his vision, our ambitions and plants of interest throughout the year! Our visitors are always surprised and stunned by the unexpected depth of our garden. We love it!

  • Small is beautiful . . .
From : Richard Davies, Hanwell, London

I chose Harrison and FitzRoy having looked at a number of designers for something very specific I wanted to create in my relatively small London garden. I had the idea of extending the internal space in the house to the garden and creating "external rooms" that would be low maintenance but allow me to entertain friends. They took my rather amateurish first draft and enhanced the ideas with thoughts on layout and planting that have now been delivered in the final design of the garden. The team were great to work with too, ensuring I was involved in the minor decisions along the way and Barney has been great afterwards in ensuring my ideas were delivered in the placing of the plants in and around the borders. The garden is now something I have enjoyed over the course of the last year, seeing it change and develop through the seasons into a place all the family now enjoy spending time in.

  • Personal touch
From : Bill & Marilyn Hall, Caterham

I would personally recommend Harrison & Fitzroy Landscape Design to anyone considering a redesign of their garden. We really appreciated Barney Harrison’s ‘personal touch’ in listening carefully to what we wanted, and then giving us something even better than we had imagined. The end result is a combination of gorgeous planting with practicality which is now the envy of all our friends! The combination of Barney’s horticultural knowledge and skills as a designer make him a pleasure to work with and, once the ‘digging’ started, I also found that there’s nothing ‘flowery’ about his work ethic. In spite of the scale of the task, he and his colleague worked through all the hottest days of summer and cheerily shifted many tons of soil, bricks, stone and slabs to push the work to completion. Always pleasant and enthusiastic, Harrison & Fitzroy stick to their budget, are a pleasure to work with, and made the whole process enjoyable.
